Wired or Wireless Networks
One decision involved in networking is what type of router to use. Basically, there are two choices a standard router or a wireless (Wi-Fi) enabled router. A standard router, or wired router, uses cables that must be run through the home or office in order to provide connectivity to workstation computer. Wireless routers are cable free and use radio bands in order to provide connectivity to surrounding computers.
The pros of wireless networks are that they eliminate unsightly wires and cable holes and, thus, increase the freedom of movement around the home. The disadvantages are that Wi-Fi networks are more expensive, are not quite as consistent or as fast in their connection, and have a much more limited range. Generally, speaking wireless routers cost up to 50% more than wired or wired routers, but some of this cost is offset by ease of installation and cable costs. As far as connectivity is concerned, wired networks offer more stable and faster connections especially when the number of concurrent internet users is greater than 2 or 3. In a perfect environment, most wireless router signals can be received up to 45m away, but in the real world interference, thick walls (as used in Hungary), and other factors usually require that computers be within 20m of the router for best results. For distances greater than 20m, multiple routers or bridges may be required. Keep in mind that most wireless routers also provide several ports for traditional cable connections as well. This availability is useful for connecting desktops which might be lacking a wireless network card, network enabled printers, or mass storage devices for backup.
Types and Sizes of Networks
Although, there are too many types of networks to discuss at length on this website, the basic types/sizes are mentioned below:
Home Network: This type of LAN usually consists of a broadband router and one or more computers. The primary reason for the network is to share an internet connection throughout the household. A wireless router is the usual choice in routers, as it allows for easier installation and greater mobility about the home.
Small Business: Small business networks generally have the same consideration and needs as home networks with a few considerations. First off, small businesses with more that 6 employees may require more than one router (to disperse network traffic) especially if internet usage is a prime activity. Also, there is likely to be a greater need for data sharing on a small business network and sometimes a small business might need a server if their business is dependent on the use of a network application.
Large Business Networks: When we talk about a larger network, we are generally talking about a LAN of more than 25 users and one that most definitely has a application server, perhaps a data server, perhaps an intranet server, a mail server, a firewall server, a VPN server, multiple routers, many shared network resources and even connectivity to other office branches. These networks configurations and installations must be very thoroughly planned before installation. After the implementation of these networks regular administration, monitoring, and maintenance is required. The cost of these solutions is usually only justifiable and beneficial in larger organizations.
Wide Area Networks: A WAN uses techinques like long distance cables or satellites to connect computers or or computer networks. Two branches of a company might make use of a WAN in order to connect to each other.
Network Administration and Mangement
Although smaller networks typically require very little management or administration, some knowledge of the how the router and computers connect to each other and the internet is useful and can save time and money if there is a problem that must be resolved.
Larger networks require much more administration and managment. A company with a large network either needs at least one in-house administrator OR an outside company that supports the network remotely and directly (as needed)
